As a home inspector, I frequently see bathroom fans clogged with dust and debris. A dirty fan doesn’t just make noise—it can trap moisture, encourage mildew, and lead to inspection notes for ventilation concerns. The good news? Cleaning your bathroom fan is quick, safe, and something any homeowner can do.

Turn Off the Fan
Before you start, switch off the fan at the wall and, if possible, turn off the breaker for extra safety.
Remove the Cover
Gently pull the cover down. Most covers can be removed without tools.
Clean the Cover
Wash the cover with warm water and mild soap. Let it dry completely before reinstalling.
Clean the Fan Blades
Use a damp cloth to carefully wipe the fan blades and motor housing. Avoid spraying water directly onto the fan.
Reinstall the Cover
Once everything is dry, snap the cover back in place and turn the fan back on.
Why These Steps Matter
A clean fan improves ventilation, reduces moisture buildup, and helps prevent mold or mildew—issues that commonly show up during home inspections. By keeping your fans clean, you’re also maintaining healthier air quality for your family.
