By following these simple home-care habits, you'll also be better prepared for future home inspections—meaning fewer surprises, fewer defects, and a more favorable inspection when it matters most.
As a home inspector, I often find smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) detectors that are missing batteries, not working, or outdated. These small, simple devices are critical for safety—and keeping them maintained is something any homeowner can do. Regular checks also help ensure fewer findings during future home inspections.

Test the Detectors Monthly
Press the “TEST” button on each smoke and CO detector. You should hear a loud beep or alarm.
Replace Batteries Yearly
Even if your detector seems to work, replace batteries once a year to be safe.
Vacuum Dust From Detectors
Dust can reduce sensitivity. Gently vacuum around the detector exterior using a soft brush attachment.
Check Placement
Ensure there is a detector outside each bedroom area and on every level of the home, per safety guidelines.
Why These Steps Matter
Functional smoke and CO detectors protect your family and prevent “safety concern” flags during inspections. Simple monthly maintenance ensures these life-saving devices are always ready to work.
